Applications of Manganese Nitrate
October 08, 2019

Manganese nitrate is a white crystalline hygroscopic solid with acidic odor that is used mainly as a colorant for ceramics and porcelain and as a catalyst in the production of manganese dioxide.  Hygroscopic substances absorb and retain atmospheric moisture.  An inorganic mixture with the chemical formula Mn(NO3)2(H2O), manganese nitrate occurs most commonly in the tetrahydrate form Mn(NO3)2(H2O)4.  Monohydrates and hexahydrates as well as anhydrous compounds are also commonly found.

Dissolving manganese carbonate in dilute nitric acid will produce manganese nitrate.  Manganese nitrate decomposes to form manganese dioxide and nitrogen dioxide upon exposure to heat.  It combines easily with calcium nitrate, calcium chloride, ammonium nitrate, copper nitrate, magnesium nitrate, and zinc nitrate.

The use of manganese dioxide in fertilizers and animal foods provides much of the demand for manganese nitrate.  Manganese dioxide can be used to correct manganese deficiencies in plants by providing elemental manganese and it also acts to reduce nitrate levels in soil, making it an effective fertilizer and plant growth agent.  It is compatible with several liquid fertilizers, pesticides, micronutrients, and water.  Additionally, the use of manganese dioxide in paints and textile dyes has been helping to drive demand upward.

Manganese nitrate is useful as a coloring agent in ceramics and porcelain and thus finds use in the manufacture of ceramic cutlery, pottery, ceramic and porcelain tile, and even medical devices.  And it finds limited application in zinc carbon batteries.  The rapid proliferation of electronic devices can therefore be expected to see increased demand for manganese nitrate in battery production.

Inhalation of sprays, mists, or vapors containing manganese nitrate may irritate the throat, nose, and lungs.  Manganese nitrate is also a skin and eye irritant and may be toxic if ingested.  It is categorized as a corrosive oxidizing material and may cause spontaneous combustion of flammable materials.  It is stable under normal temperatures and pressures but should be stored in an area with adequate ventilation and away from excessive heat.
