Product Overview: Alkylene 306 & Alkylene 408 Multi-Use Surfactants
November 11, 2019

Alkylene 306 (CAS 51811-79-1; 68412-53-3; 68412-54-4) and Alkylene 408 (CAS 12788-93-1) are multi-use surfactants supplied by Independent Chemical Corporation.  These products act as detergents, wetting agents, emulsifiers, foaming agents, and dispersants.

The term surfactant is derived from the words surface active agent.  As active ingredients in detergents, surfactants remove dirt from skin, clothing and various household articles.  They also have numerous industrial applications.  Surfactants function by breaking down the interface between water and oils or dirt. They also hold these oils and dirt in suspension, enabling easy removal. They are able to act in this way because they contain both a hydrophilic (water loving) group, such as an acid anion (-CO2- or SO3-) and a hydrophobic (water hating) group, such as an alkyl chain. Molecules of water tend to congregate near the former and molecules of the water-insoluble material congregate near the latter.

Alkylene 306 is a general use surfactant for detergency, while alkylene 408 can be used for maximum coupling.  Because of its low foaming properties, alkylene 408 is particularly useful in machine dishwashing and glassware washing formulations.  It is also used in drain cleaners, soak tank cleaners, heavy duty all-purpose cleaners and textile wetting agents in high pressure machines.
